Synopsis
When you’re dead, everything is simple: no surprises, no conflicts, no regrets. On the other hand, when you are almost dead, anything can happen. After surviving a serious car accident, filmmaker Jil Servant—who is of part Martiniquan heritage—surveys his life. Living mainly in France but working in the French Caribbean, he considers an existence made up of images and sweat, and the challenges of being a Caribbean filmmaker.
Near-Death Experience will be preceded by the short Fouyé Zétwal (Plowing the Stars).

About the Director
For over 20 years, Jil Servant, from Martinique and Djibouti, has been making documentary films. His work mixes identity issues, social issues, historical research, and cultural practices. In 2002 he directed A Strange Arrival, acquired by Forum des Images (Paris). His other films include Seasickness (2005), selected for Vues d’Afrique (Montreal) and FIFIG (Groix Island), The Pride of Being a Negro Woman (2006), selected for Fémi (Guadeloupe), Nation, place des Antilles (2009), Eda’s Choice (2014), Guavas for the Road (2017), and French Guiana: From the Prison to the Stars (2020). All these films have been broadcasted on France O, RFO, ATV, TV5, Trace TV or KTO.
